That is a great point Andy...You should aim to never be in the position of having to chase your debts. Cashflow is critical to a small business (and a large business too) and if possible, you should fund from revenue rather than having a significant debt. One potential option is to use factoring, a form of selling on your debt for a proportion of the value. There are risks here that may be the content of a later blog, but you point is very relevant. Watch the cash and don't go broke!

A very comprehensive primer on starting a business off on the right foot. I would add one point. Learn how to get your customers to pay you up front for the value you are giving them, instead of your having to borrow up front to buy the materials or labor needed to serve your customers. In this day and age of tight credit, you must keep a liquid balance sheet and get your customers to finance your profitable growth.

I'd like to say thank you for the good work putting this together. I'd like your permission to link your blog to our site. We do similar work but we are focused on the much younger audience (16 years to about 22).

Once again, thanks.

Keeping track of connections is an important one for me. I definitely need to improve in this area. I have noticed that Gmail and all e-mail has great ways to keep track of birthdays, etc. regarding your personal friends and acquaintances. The more I can be thinking of adding value to my connections without seeking anything in return, the better I and they will be served in the long term. Great article!!
